What is blue light, these are the harmful effects of blue light and how to protect yourself from the harmful effects it can have on your vision.

WHAT IS BLUE LIGHT?

Sunlight is made up of a spectrum of colors including red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet light. When all the spectrum of colors is combined, it becomes the white light we see. Each of these colors of light has a different energy and wavelength. Rays on the red end have longer wavelengths and less energy. Blue rays which are on the opposite side of the spectrum as red, have shorter wavelengths and more energy. The light that looks white can have a large blue component, which can expose the eye to a higher amount of wavelength from the blue end of the spectrum.

The sun is one of the largest sources of blue light that we are exposed to. While the exposure we receive from screens is small compared to the amount of exposure from the sun, studies suggest that over time, exposure to the blue end of the light spectrum could cause serious long-term damage to your eyes.

The concern is mainly due to the close proximity of the screens we look at and the length of time spent looking at them.

The largest source of blue light is sunlight. In addition to the sun, there are many other sources of blue light. Some of them include:

  • Fluorescent light
  • CFL (compact fluorescent light) bulbs
  • LED light
  • Flat screen LED televisions
  • Computer monitors
  • Smartphones
  • Tablet screens

Keep in mind, it is not only adults who can be affected by our digital devices. Studies are also now showing that children’s eyes absorb more blue light than adults from digital screens. According to the Vision Council adults have noticed their children have the following side effects after being exposed to a screen for more than two hours a day. 

  • Headaches
  • Neck/shoulder pain
  • Eye strain, dry or irritated eyes
  • Reduced attention span 
  • Poor behavior
  • Irritability

DIGITAL EYE STRAIN
Digital Eye Strain (DES)—also known as Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS)—is a group of symptoms associated with the overuse of digital devices. Its high-frequency blue light can stress out the retina causing poor eye health.

Most of us are up into the night and many times in front of our screens (staying late at work, watching TV, reading on our phone or tablet).

Exposure to blue light can damage light-sensitive cells in the retina, causing changes that resemble those of macular degeneration, which can lead to vision loss. Eye care providers are concerned that the added blue light exposure from computer screens, smartphones, and other digital devices might increase a person's risk of macular degeneration later in life.
